Health claim

Supplemental folic acid intake increases maternal folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the developing fetus.
The beneficial effect is obtained with a supplemental daily folic acid intake of at least 400 µg for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
Neural tube defects have multiple risk factors; altering one of these may or may not have a beneficial effect.
